The decision on whether to use the green route (self-archiving in a repository) or the gold route (direct publication in an open-access journal). This step determines the entire subsequent process regarding funding, copyright, and the subsequent dissemination of your work.
Searching for a suitable journal, for example, using the directory DOAJ, or by using verification tools such as “Think – Check – Publish.” Thorough verification ensures that your work will be published in an ethical and reputable academic setting.
A thorough review of the journal’s quality standards, the length of the peer-review process, and the publisher’s overall credibility. Particular attention should be paid to predatory journals that exploit the Open Access model solely to collect fees without providing any real scientific value.
Determine the terms and conditions regarding article processing charges (APCs) and verify whether a a transformative agreement. These agreements often allow authors from our university to publish with renowned publishers completely free of charge.
Preparing the text, tables, graphs, and citations in strict accordance with the formal and stylistic requirements of the selected journal. Proper structure and adherence to the publisher’s template significantly speed up the formal approval process prior to the peer review process itself.
Final submission of the manuscript via the publisher’s online editorial system, including the completion of all necessary metadata. At this stage, any conflicts of interest are typically disclosed, and the sources of research funding are listed.
Peer review of the work by independent reviewers, followed by the incorporation of their comments and constructive criticism. This process is key to enhancing the scientific value of the article and is a prerequisite for its successful acceptance for publication.
Securing financial coverage and actually paying the article processing charge in cases where the journal does not use a free model or a transformational agreement. Payment is typically made from grant funds, project funds, or institutional resources only after the article has been officially accepted.
Publication, following which the article will be available on the publisher’s website, or the legal distribution of the publication through institutional repositories, ORCID, social networks such as ResearchGate, and similar platforms.
Self-archiving, for example, of a preprint or an accepted manuscript in a repository in accordance with the journal's guidelines, e.g., through the Jisc service (formerly Sherpa).
